Crystal alternative: Aiola

Aiola puts errors, feedback, GitHub and analytics next to coding agents on macOS and Windows. Crystal: a deprecated coding-agent workspace; consider its successor.

The short answer

Aiola connects coding agents to errors, feedback, GitHub and analytics in one desktop app. Tasks and notes carry each fix through review. Crystal was deprecated in February 2026. Evaluate its recommended successor Nimbalyst for a new setup, and keep Crystal for existing work or migration.

Which one fits

When Aiola is the better choice and when Crystal is.

Choose Aiola when…

  • Keep reports beside coding agents. Hosted features require Pro or a trial.

  • Use Tasks, Notebook, Automations and Central across projects.

  • Manage repositories with threads, persistent terminals, optional worktrees and your own provider access.

  • You want one desktop app for macOS and Windows with a phone companion available on the iPhone App Store and Android Google Play.

Choose Crystal when…

  • You are preserving an existing Crystal installation while planning migration.

  • You need to inspect the legacy source for compatibility with an existing workflow.

  • You are evaluating its official successor Nimbalyst rather than starting a new Crystal setup.

A working day with Aiola and Crystal

If you used Crystal for several coding sessions, begin with an inventory rather than a new prompt. Identify each repository, branch, unfinished diff, and task that still matters. Crystal was deprecated in February 2026, and its repository recommends Nimbalyst for active updates. That successor belongs in your evaluation alongside Aiola. This matters especially if preserving a familiar kind of workspace matters more than adding providers.

In Aiola, add a repository and rebuild a current task from its saved brief and Notebook notes. A Feedback report (Pro/trial) can supply a concrete reproduction for a fix thread. Choose Local or Worktree execution, review the diff, and run the repository’s checks before recreating more work.

Crystal was deprecated in February 2026. Its official repository recommends Nimbalyst for active updates. Legacy macOS and Linux packages and a Windows source build are documented. Crystal’s MIT software license costs $0; provider access is separate.

Check that it handles the repositories, parallel tasks, and provider accounts you use. Preserve unfinished branches and notes first. Evaluate Nimbalyst as the official successor. Evaluate Aiola for turning GitHub issues and Feedback reports (Pro/trial) into agent tasks with review steps.

Aiola runs Claude Code locally against your repository using your own provider access. It also supports Codex, Cursor, Grok CLI, OpenCode, and Antigravity. Prompts and file context go to the provider you choose; hosted and account services have separate data flows.

An inspectable source project can be a good fit if you are comfortable checking build requirements and maintenance. opcode publishes macOS and Linux packages and documents Windows source builds. Its ongoing maintenance cadence remains unverified. Nimbalyst is Crystal’s recommended successor.

Where Crystal is the better fit

Crystal’s strongest reason to remain in a workflow is continuity for an existing installation. Access to legacy source can also help you understand old behavior. That is different from recommending it for a fresh setup. Legacy packages, a Windows source build, and a $0 MIT software license are documented. An old cross-platform or free-app description should not be treated as a current promise.

Nimbalyst is the official recommendation in Crystal’s repository. Consider it if an open-source visual workspace is important to you. Aiola is a commercial alternative that turns Feedback reports into tasks (Pro/trial). It also offers GitHub reviews in project context, Notebook plans, and local scheduled follow-ups. Neither choice removes the need to preserve uncommitted work. Check compatibility with the CLI and account you intend to use.

Moving from Crystal: setup and first task

Save unfinished changes first, note which branch belongs to each session, and keep any instructions or notes you still need. Do not remove an old installation until the replacement can complete a representative task. No automatic import of Crystal history or session state is promised here. Rebuild one saved plan in Notebook and use it to scope a task before asking an agent to change code.

Install Aiola, authenticate a supported CLI, add one repository, and run a small change through review and tests. Recreate recurring work manually only after an interactive run succeeds. Hosted Analytics, App Logs, Feedback, hosted MCP, and Setup Health require Pro/trial. Include eligibility in your migration decision if those features matter. GUI Lifetime covers the local GUI rather than those hosted services.

What local execution and hosted access mean

Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, Grok CLI, OpenCode, Antigravity are the six supported CLIs. Bring your own Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor, xAI, Google, or configured OpenCode access. Aiola never resells models or adds token markup. Provider limits and permissions still apply. Review generated code before using it.

Per-thread Local or Worktree choice; worktrees isolate working files, not merge conflicts. Agent instructions and memory are scoped to each workspace. Automations run locally while Aiola is running and the desktop is on and awake. Start with a manual run, check the result, and schedule only work you know how to review. Parallel agents still need clear task boundaries and an integration check.

Your repositories, threads, tasks, notes, and automation definitions stay local. Prompts and file context go to the provider you choose. Account, billing, diagnostics, optional telemetry and push delivery use services. Optional hosted product data also goes to Aiola’s infrastructure. Local-first describes the coding workspace, rather than every data flow in the product.

Hosted Analytics, App Logs, Feedback, hosted MCP, and Setup Health require Pro/trial. Hosted features need Pro or the 7-day trial on Pro Monthly. Compare Pro and GUI Lifetime before choosing a plan.

Aiola desktop supports macOS 12+ on Apple Silicon and Intel, and Windows 10+ (64-bit). Android is live on Google Play. Aiola for iPhone is available on the App Store. Phone access does not turn a local desktop job into an always-on hosted worker.

Sources and verification limits

This comparison is published by Aiola. The tables preserve the original comparison topics. Prices, platforms and availability were checked against the linked official sources. “Not verified” cells are open questions for your setup. They do not establish that a competitor lacks a feature. No hands-on performance ranking is implied.

We checked the official sources on 2026-10-27. “Not verified” means those sources did not establish the answer; the feature may still exist. A documented download or source build establishes availability. We did not install every product or assess future maintenance.

Crystal was deprecated in February 2026 and will receive no future updates. Features, downloads, source builds, and MIT pricing describe legacy Crystal; the repository recommends Nimbalyst.
